As part of the Surveillance Counter Narratives project, I commissioned this collection of stories from Brazil. The Chupadados is a remix of the Chupacabre, a latin-american folk myth of a creature that steals into the bedrooms of children at night to suck their blood. The Chupadados, however, sucks your data. And in particular the data from the bodies, homes and cities of women in the global south. Mozilla Fellow Joana Varon created these projects via Coding Rights, the feminist digital rights and media studio she founded in Rio.
The project consists of long essays as well as technology interventions such as Fuzzify.me, a browser extension to obfuscate Facebook’s advertising algorithm.
